What to Wear for Your Engagement Photos | Huntsville & Nashville Wedding Photographer Tips

If you’ve booked your engagement session with me (or you’re planning one in Huntsville or Nashville), chances are you’ve already asked yourself… what in the world do we wear?

And I get it. This is one of the biggest stress points for couples, but it really doesn’t have to be.

I always tell my couples this first—your outfits should feel like you. Not a version of you that you found on Pinterest, not something you’re trying for the first time ever… just you on your best day.

Here are a few things I walk through with all of my couples before their session:

Don’t let this be the time you try something totally new

If you have an outfit that feels a little more bold or out of your comfort zone, I’m not saying don’t wear it. I actually love when couples bring a little personality into their session.

But I do recommend also bringing something you know you love.

Something you’ve worn before, something you feel confident in, something you don’t have to second guess. That way, you’re not spending your whole session adjusting or wondering if it looks right.

The goal is for you to feel relaxed and like yourself, especially in front of the camera.

Coordinate with your partner—don’t match them

This is probably the biggest tip I give, especially for my Huntsville and Nashville couples planning engagement photos.

You don’t want to match exactly. Like… both of you in the same color shirt? It just doesn’t photograph the way you think it will.

Instead, think about outfits that go together without being identical.

If one of you is wearing something soft or neutral, the other can pull in a color that complements it. When you stand next to each other, your outfits should look intentional, not copy-and-paste.

Think about your location (especially here in North Alabama & Middle Tennessee)

If we’re shooting on a mountain overlook in Huntsville or out in an open field near Nashville, wind is a real thing.

Flowy dresses are beautiful, but if it’s super windy, they can turn into something you’re constantly fighting with. Same with really lightweight fabrics.

I always recommend choosing pieces that you can move in easily—walking, sitting, spinning, all of it—without having to fix your outfit every two seconds.

The little details matter more than you think

This is the unglamorous part, but it’s important.

Seamless underwear is your best friend, especially with tighter outfits or certain fabrics. Make sure straps (like bras or undershirts) aren’t showing unless you want them to. Check for lines, bunching, or anything that might show through in photos.

These are the kinds of things you don’t notice in the moment, but they will show up in your images.

At the end of the day—wear what makes you feel good

You have full freedom here. Truly.

But I will say, the best photos always happen when you feel confident and comfortable. When you’re not overthinking what you’re wearing, you’re able to actually be present with each other, and that’s what makes the magic happen.

If you feel good, it shows. Every single time.

And if you’re stuck… bring options

I’m always happy to help you decide between outfits when you get to your session. Sometimes things photograph differently than you expect, and having a backup option is never a bad idea.
